The width might not seem like a big issue, and space allowances will probably dictate your width more than anything else (most people have limited space), but the widest you can make it (space and money allowing) the better. Example: An 8 foot quarter is fine for airing, lip tricks, etc. but you will never ‘grind’ an 8 foot wide quarter. The approach and exit angle needed (not to mention the length of the bike) is too great to get on the coping, slide, and exit if it is only 8 feet wide. If you want to grind your quarter, make it at LEAST 20 feet wide. 16 feet is almost too narrow for grinding, and 24 feet is better if you have the room, and money. The shorter the height of the quarter is, the narrower it can be and still allow grinding, in general. If you want to grind, the width is an IMPORTANT consideration.

The curved surface of a quarter pipe directs riders up and above the ramp, enabling riders to perform a trick and then land back onto the ramp and roll away. It's a skate board ramp for any skateboard park design.
The best outdoor surface I have found, is to lay (2) 3/8” sheets of plywood, grain running left to right, not up and down, on the quarter ribs. PRIME each side and edges first, with a good primer, and then PAINT the last final surface, adding 2 cups of clean sand to 1 Gallon of paint. This is just enough to make it “grippy”, but not so rough that you are instant hamburger bailing into the transition. You can also use the two sheets of plywood and lay 22 gauge steel over it. Steel can be slippery when hot or wet, but you can paint the steel surface in the same manner. Note – A steel surface needs to be “prepped” to remove manufacturing oils, and the correct paint used for “metal”. It is not the same as painting wood.
